Mint: RSS Aggregator Pepper

Mint is a package for live-stats of your website, written by Shaun Inman. With an API it is possible to extend the basic functionality of this package. PlugIns using this API are called “Pepper”.
This Pepper is called the RSS Aggregator Pepper. It enables you to read in multiple rss feeds to control them in your mint admin area. Use it for example for controlling comments on your blog, keeping an eye on external data which is provided as rss or just to read the newest entries of other weblogs. A favorite of mine is controlling server status with Montastic.

RSS Aggregator Pepper

Features

  • handles multiple feeds
  • sorts feed data by date
  • works with (almost any kinds of) rss feeds (RSS 2.0, RSS 0.91, Atom), using MagpieRSS-library
  • allows caching of feed data

Limitations and Requirements

RSS Aggregator works with Mint versions greater 1.20. RSS-Feeds without timestamp (e.g. rss 0.91) cannot be sorted.

Installation

  1. Download the files, unzip, and copy the alexpisculla folder into your /mint/pepper folder. The total path for the pepper should be /mint/pepper/alexpisculla/rssaggregator
  2. Login to your Mint installation and in the Preferences click “Install” under Pepper
  3. Click the RSS Aggregator Pepper “Install” button. Click “Okay.”
  4. Now click on the RSS Aggregator preferences under Pepper in the preferences pane.
  5. In the textarea, type your rss feeds (one per line)
  6. Click “Done.”

If you want to enable caching (and I strongly recommend that if you use RSS Aggregator for blog reading purposes), make the folder /mint/pepper/alexpisculla/rssaggregator/cache writable (i.e. chmod 777 cache)

    Great idea, and very useful!

This also brings up the idea of using the Mint engine for non-statistical purposes. I’m working on a simple Pepper to show a static text message. What about a lightweight blog engine? Or a slideshow Pepper that shows photos? You could have an installation of Mint that doesn’t have any of the standard stats Peppers at all.

Well, I think the main purpose of Mint should be controlling of a website in anyway.
The intention of the RSS Aggregator Pepper was not to display the newest entries of a weblog (although the screenshot shows blog entries). I developed it for controlling new comments on my blog, monitoring the server status and checking new backlinks in the MSN search engine.
